Super Foods – Old Wine in New Glass
Now-a-days there’s much awareness of what are called “Super Foods”. This is our traditional concept that has come with a new name called “Super foods”. These are foods that are loaded with good qualities which help in lowering blood cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. Nutritionists and medical practitioners are urging people to maintain healthy lifestyle using the “super foods”.
It’s much easier to include these super foods in our diet, onion and garlic – the two most widely used vegetables in India, have many benefits. Garlic even prevents certain types of cancers. Tomatoes are rich in lycopine. A glass of carrot of beet root juice all make a wholesome fortifying breakfast.
Super foods is not actually a new concept, Maca for instance grown in the mountains is packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins, tannins, alkaloids and other phytochemicals. This superfood was consumed for thousands of years by the Incas. Colostrum – the milk given by the cow within 8-hours of the birth of its calf, is high in anti-ageing properties. This superfood helps in building the immune system.
We are now-a-days using UHT milk, but it is always better to go in for fresh milk. Gooseberry(Amla), which was a very traditional food item used since our olden days, is very rich in Vitamin C. It is a remedy for many disease. Ayurveda, an ancient medicine uses Goose berry(Amla) for treating many disease like :
Hair care: Amla enriches hair growth and hair pigmentation. Amla oil is very popular in India as it serves as a very good hair growth booster thereby preventing hair loos.
Eye care: Taking Gooseberry juice with honey is good for improving eyesight. It reduces intraocular tension.
Diabetes: Gooseberry contains chromium. It has a therapeutic value in diabetics. Indian Gooseberry or Amla stimulate the isolated group of cells that secrete the hormone insulin. Thus it reduces blood sugar in diabetic patient.
Diarrhea and dysentery: Amla has very good laxative property in it, therefore it is a good medicine for diarrhoea and dysentery.
Improving appetite: Consuming Gooseberry powder with butter and honey before meal improves appetite. It helps in balancing Nitrogen level and thus increases weight in a healthy way.
Onion, garlic, ginger, green beans, carrots, spinach, honey, soy tomatoes and squarsh which are good sources of antioxidants and phytonutrients make good super foods.
